MetaMask is a popular wallet for storing and managing cryptocurrencies. But there’s a problem—it doesn’t natively support the Solana network because MetaMask is built for Ethereum-based chains.
However, you can still connect Solana to MetaMask by using a workaround like the Sollet Extension. In this article, we'll guide you on how to add solana network to metamask.
Why Can’t MetaMask Directly Support Solana?
MetaMask was designed for blockchains that use Ethereum’s technology (like Polygon or Binance Smart Chain).
Solana is different and uses its own special technology.
But you can still manage Solana tokens in a way that works alongside MetaMask by linking them through external wallets.
What You Need Before You Start
- Make sure you have the MetaMask extension installed and set up on your browser or mobile device.
- Download a Solana-compatible wallet like Phantom or Sollet to store Solana tokens.
Steps to Add the Solana Network
Step 1: Download the Sollet Wallet
Sollet is a wallet built for Solana. You’ll need it to act as a “bridge” between MetaMask and the Solana blockchain.
- Go to the Sollet wallet website (make sure it’s the official one).
- Create a new wallet and save your recovery phrase somewhere safe.
Step 2: Fund Your Solana Wallet
To start, you’ll need some Solana (SOL) tokens in your Sollet wallet. You can buy SOL from an exchange like Coinbase or Binance and send it to your Sollet wallet address.
Step 3: Use Wrapped Tokens for MetaMask
Since MetaMask doesn’t support Solana directly, you’ll need to work with a token version called Wrapped Solana (wSOL). Think of wSOL as Solana that’s been “packaged” to work on Ethereum-like networks.
- Go to a platform like Wormhole Bridge (a Solana-to-Ethereum bridge).
- Connect your Sollet wallet to Wormhole.
- Convert your Solana (SOL) into Wrapped Solana (wSOL).
Step 4: Add wSOL to MetaMask
- Open MetaMask and log in.
- At the bottom, click Import Tokens.
- Paste the wSOL contract address (you can find this address on Solana’s official website or Wormhole).
- Confirm, and now wSOL will appear in your MetaMask wallet.
Things to Remember
- Solana and MetaMask don’t directly communicate, so you’re using a workaround with Wrapped Solana.
- Each step, like sending tokens or wrapping SOL, might come with small fees.
- Always double-check addresses and websites to avoid scams.
Finally
Once you’ve added Wrapped Solana to MetaMask, you can send or trade it just like other tokens.
While it’s not a direct connection to Solana, this method lets you use Solana assets with Ethereum tools.
If you prefer something simpler, you can skip MetaMask and use a wallet like Phantom, which is made specifically for Solana and doesn’t need extra steps.
